Noise Pollution from Reversing Vehicles Does anyone share my dislike of that awful beeping noise that large vehicles make when they are reversing? I live in a lovely rural village in the middle of England, and most of the time it's rather peaceful - birds singing, cows mooing, the odd dog barking, a donkey braying... you get the picture. BUT... we are only a mile or so from the JCB World Headquarters where they make huge mechanical diggers. Also, there are a number of houses being built in the village. So there are quite a few construction vehicles in the area and it sometimes seems that they spend most of their time being driven in reverse! I am so sick of that irritating, repetitive BEEP.. BEEP.. BEEP.. BEEP.. which I can sometimes hear even quite late at night if the windows are open. The noise pollution drives me crazy! OK, I know that reversing vehicles are a hazard and it's probably a great idea to have an audible warning to stop people being squashed, but does the warning noise have to be so omni-directional and far-reaching? Please, please can some clever acoustic engineer invent a reversing warning beep that is only audible within a sensible range of the hazard?
